West Carpathians

West Carpathians lies between Danube River Valley in south and Somes-Barcau River Valleys in north; they have a medium height of 1200-1400m, getting higher in north (reach the highest top on Vladeasa Mountains - 1836m). They are dividing into three groups:

1 Banat Mountains Group in south, with 1446m the highest peak; in their north part lies "Semenic" Resort;
2 Poiana Rusca Mountains Group placed north to Banat Mountains, they are not considered a touristic attraction and has some environmental problems (caused by excessive mining);
3 Apuseni Mountains Group are a touristic attraction; the mountains are higher in NE part in "Bihor" Mountains (max. 1836m); here you will find the most beautifull caves in Romania; there are several resorts: "Stina de Vale" and " Moneasa" (for cure)in the west side; "Muntele Baisorii" and "Baisoara" in the east side; "Vata de Jos" SE and "Geoagiu-Bai"(for cure) in south.
On the whole, the mountains are recommended for those which prefer soft slopes instead of steepy ones, large roads through the forests; here are also very easy feet-trips ussually unmarked, very long, the villages are spreaded everywhere in the mountains, you can find a place overnight in a peasant farm if you know the roads very well, if not, it is better to have a tent with you; also you can use a jeep to cross them. The villages from these mountains (Apuseni) have maintained a very traditional way of life, so if you are interested in romanian folk art, here is the right place to look for it; once a year, in "Gaina" Mountain (placed south in that group) there take a place a festival called "The Girls Fair"; that is a celebration of an old tradition (it is used to say that here girls were sold to men as wifes or marriages for interest as it is nowadays acknowledged everywhere).
