Short historical presentation of Romania

Romania is a democratic republic leaded by a govern with a prime minister and a president elected by the nation vote; it is a united teritory now, unity which was gained in time with a lot of sacrifices. During the history of the second millenium, the country was divided in teritories reigned by the Big Neighbour Powers. In the nineteenth century, with the help of France, the country succeeded to take advantage of the weakness of the Big Neighbour Powers and started the way to statal unity and cultural and scientific modernization. I mention here several of the romanian personalities of nineteenth century which take part to the construction of modern Romania: N. Balcescu,A. I. Cuza, M. Kogalniceanu, I. C. Bratianu, Carol I, Petre Carp and others. One of the big neighbour powers which reigned part of Romania (Transylvania and Bucovina) was The Austro-Hungarian Empire (between 1867-1918), another was The Russian Empire (which reigned Basarabia, today an independent state east from Romania called Moldavia Republic). During the first world war, the romanians fight near by Antanta ( or the triple understanding made of England, France and Russia) and gained the right to be supported by the Big European Powers in their fight for unification. So, at the 1-st of december 1918 (today the national day of Romania), these estranged teritories were finally united. After this Union, the country stepted into the modern phase of capitalist type democracy; it succeeded to make a real economy and gained an worthy place in the europen contest. Unfortunatelly, the second world war found Romania caught between the interests of the two big powers of that moment, Hiltler's Germany and Stalin' Sovietic Russia. The country was compelled to accept the military leadership of Ion Antonescu and enter the war against Sovietic Russia to take back Basarabia stolen again by Stalin in 1940. It is known that in 1945, Romania was bewteen the small defeated states and had to bear the consequences of war defeat, also the consequences of long sovietic occupation and comunist dictatorship installed here by Stalin. The dictatorship lasted 45 years untill 1989.
